White Lung | 23/04/14

Image: White Lung Snake Jaw

White Lung hit us with another ripper, ‘Snake Jaw’ which is included as the B-Side to their Drown With The Monster 7” which is out next Monday, April 28th on Domino.  US site Rookie had the lead with the track and spoke to Mish Way about the song’s themes:

“That song’s about body dysmorphia and its residuals. I feel like I there are two women battling in my head sometimes: my completely confident self who can tell anyone to fuck off at the flick of a finger, and this other woman who hates herself, her body, and her mind, not because she actually hates herself, but because she has been told by her culture to hate herself for not being MORE, BETTER, THINNER, PRETTIER. Being crippled by a hatred for your own body—why? How did that happen to our fucking culture?”

‘Snake Jaw’ is also featured on White Lung’s upcoming full-length album, Deep Fantasy, out June 16th via Domino.

Their third full length album, Deep Fantasy, proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears the hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

After a year plus of near constant touring behind last album, Sorry — which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview —White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who also did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It’s the Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one.  William handled bass duties on Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (‘Drown With the Monster’), body dysmorphia (‘Snake Jaw’) and sexual dynamics (‘Down It Goes,’) amongst other dinner table topics.  Kenneth, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Deep Fantasy will be available to pre-order. 1,000 limited edition (WIGLP335X) coke bottle clear vinyl with a 9"x24" folded screen-printed poster will be available, plus 50 randomly selected fans will receive a fanzine designed by the band. This will be available through Dom Mart and Indies.  Pre-order the album HERE.

New single ‘Drown With The Monster’ is available digitally (RUG548D) and will be available on limited edition 7" (RUIG548) through Dom Mart from April 28th. Pre-order via Dom Mart HERE and buy via iTunes HERE.

Villagers | 09/04/14

Image: Villagers_Soloshot_NL.jpg

Villagers’ Conor O’ Brien has announced two upcoming London performances - Ceiliúradh at the Royal Albert Hall this Thursday 10th April and David Lynch-Revisited at The Barbican on 20th June.

On the historic occasion of the first State Visit by the President of Ireland to the United Kingdom, President Michael D. Higgins will be guest of honour at Ceiliúradh, a special evening of music, spoken word and dance at the Royal Albert Hall featuring some of Ireland's finest musicians, singers, actors, authors and poets. Conor O'Brien will perform alongside Imelda May, Lisa Hannigan, Donal Lunny + very special guests. The event is now sold out.

On Friday 20th June, Conor O'Brien will be performing songs at the "David Lynch - Revisited" event at The Barbican; the world premiere of a new live homage to the songs and music from David Lynch’s films. From the romantic songs of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, to the violence of iconic scenes in Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart or Lost Highway, sound is a vital component of David Lynch’s films – it’s in the wind, in the air, and in the people’s thoughts; his carefully chosen songs conveying his characters’ mental states. Lynch’s songbook includes original versions by Roy Orbison, David Bowie, Chris Isaak, Samuel Barber, Marilyn Manson and Elvis Presley. In Dreams brings together a stellar cast of singers to reinterpret these classic songs. Tickets are available HERE

Having won Ireland’s prestigious Meteor Choice Music Prize for {Awayland} last month, Villagers are set to release their new, James-Ford produced single, ‘Occupy Your Mind’ on limited edition clear vinyl on Record Store Day. The 7” release will be backed by new track ‘Beatitudes’ exclusively for the occasion. Originally written in support of the lgbt community in Russia on the advent of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, ‘Occupy Your Mind’ is a standalone single, not featuring on either of Villagers’ Mercury Music Prize-nominated albums {Awayland} and Becoming A Jackal.  Taking place on April 19th, Record Store Day celebrates the art of music around the world, bringing independent retailers and artists together for a series of events and releases. Watch the video for ‘Occupy Your Mind’ below.

Wild Beasts | 08/04/14

A Simple Beautiful Truth will be released as the next single from Wild Beasts on 19th May 2014. This is the second single from their fourth album, Present Tense, which entered the UK album charts at 10 and is already seen as one of the best albums of the year so far (Gigwise, NME, MOJO).

The accompanying video was filmed by Klaus Thymann. The band had the following to say about it: 'We were inspired enough by the absurdist approach taken by Talking Heads to don electric suits and dance in the ether on the top of a Beacons mountain. We wanted to capture the weightlessness of a song like A Simple Beautiful Truth, to attempt something so ridiculous as to be sublime. The experience was strangely liberating and we asked ourselves why we hadn't done this before.'

Wild Beasts have just completed a UK tour in support of Present Tense, which culminated in a sold out, unforgettable show at London’s Brixton Academy, the band’s biggest London headline show to date. The band are currently on tour in Europe and will return to the UK to perform at The Great Escape, End Of The Road (as the Sunday night headline act) and Bestival, with further dates to be announced. Full live dates are below.

Alongside its breathtaking leap in production (Wild Beasts worked in close collaboration with co-producers Lexxx and Brian Eno protégé Leo Abrahams), Present Tense finds the band at the peak of their considerable songwriting powers – each one of the album’s eleven tracks illuminating the precious, tender, sad and funny moments of modern life in their trademark plain-spoken poetics. The album is available to buy now from Dom Mart and iTunes.
