''I would say that's all you need to start a record label, one band you believe in passionately'' Laurence Bell

Ardent, Def Jam, Dischord, Motown, Postcard, Sarah, Sun, Two Tone, Warp, World Circuit, the list goes on. All these independent record labels were born out of the same thing, a genuine love for new music and a compulsion to get it out into the world.

Today is Independents Day celebrating independent music across the world and to mark the occasion, if you buy any album at all from our Mart today, we'll automatically throw in a free copy of the All The Rage Domino compilation which is chock full of stand out tracks from Clinic, Sons & Daughters, Stephen Malkmus and includes an exclusive Arctic Monkeys recording from Glastonbury 2007 covering 'Diamonds are forever'.

If you've always wondered ''how the hell did Domino manage to sign the likes of The Kills, Franz Ferdinand and the Arctic Monkeys?'', there's a wonderful 'Domino Documentary' you can hear on XFM now which features Domino founder Laurence Bell talking about the tough early days in a basement bedroom with just an incredible Sebadoh record for company to driving all the way up to Stockton on Tees and being spellbound bound by a certain Sheffield band. There's also interviews with Alison from The Kills, Alex from Franz and Alex from Arctic Monkeys all describing how they became Domino bands.

It's a great story of luck, taste, trust, love and amazing music and also features some sage advise from Mr. Alex Kapranos for any aspiring bands:

''If you know deep down that your band is crap, go for the major label deal cause they give you a huge advance up front. If you know inside that your band might be pretty good then go with the independent cause they’re going to grow and nurture you and allow you to make the music you want to make.''

Tune in to MTV2 tonight at 8.30pm, the music channel is kindly doing a 'MTV2 Loves Domino' programme and 6 Music is playing only independent released music all day until 9pm tonight.
