Earlier this year The Pastels finally returned with a long-awaited new record, Slow Summits. ‘Kicking Leaves’, one of the key tracks, slaloms fantastically in and out of focus, Katrina Mitchell's vocal gliding along Craig Armstrong's majestic string arrangement.
The video was shot by Blair Young at The Forest Of Black. Watch it below:
"’Kicking Leaves’ is sunblind chill in Fall, or maybe the cool warmth of late Spring, depending on which hemisphere you're standing in right now. If it's Autumn where you are, every breath trails white as quiet colours collide in the beam of your vision. This moment of transformation is one The Pastels have always captured well, when you're see-sawing between states, just before diving in with typical boldness and bravura (the strings skirling around the song's coda capture that giddy moment of uncertainty perfectly).
“The Forest Of Black respond with a beautiful film of many parts: double-exposures that gently psychedelicise Glasgow landscapes; sudden bursts of saturated energy like the 'closed-eye vision' celebrated by Stan Brakhage, "the shapes and colours we see when our eyes are closed," as Fred Camper explains. But the kinetic drive of the treatments also reminds me of other pioneers of experimental film form, like Margaret Tait, Marie Menken, Rose Lowder and Cecile Fontaine, whose beautiful filmic visions present new ways of seeing, tender buttons of exploration and inspiration, channelled by cinematic free radicals." - Jon Dale, Melbourne, November 2013
"They tell me I should be searching.
But I am only celebrating what I see.
I am searching for nothing.
I am happy." - Jonas Mekas
The Pastels will be playing a set at Mono in Glasgow on December 7th. You can read more HERE.
Franz Ferdinand release a new single, Bullet, on Monday January 20th2014, taken from their highly acclaimed, life affirming fourth album ‘Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action’.
Bullet was produced by Prince House Rabbit, recorded in Scotland and mixed in Vancouver, Canada by Mike Fraser.
The single is accompanied by a video directed by Glasgow School Of Art Alumni Andy Knowles, who has also shot videos for The Cribs, The Vaccines, Clinic and Peaches.
"I’ve worked with the band in one way or another since their first gig, back in 2002, which was in my ex-girlfriend’s bedroom. I wanted to capture a stripped back, honest performance and I think having a good relationship with the guys helped achieve this. The ‘bulletime’ effect was added to really draw out little moments that every fan will recognize as signature Franz live performance tics. The song is so fast, it demanded an equally dizzy editing style to really capture the energy." – Andy Knowles

Austra have shared a video for their forthcoming single, Forgive Me, which will be released on 25th November. The video was directed by Claire Edmondson who also created the sexually charged, yet endearingly candid video for ‘Beat And The Pulse’. Austra’s Katie Stelmanis said the following about the video:
"A night-vision camera captures life in a dark park. Among the hidden corners and leaf-covered hideaways, people purge and absolve their sins through sexual liberation. We highlight a romance between a man and a woman who seek forgiveness from each-other: the only forgiveness that is of any importance. "
Forgive Me is the latest single to be released from Austra’s second album Olympia, and will be available as a three track digital bundle (RUG563) alongside two new tracks, Hopeless Place and Holy Place.
Austra will be back in the UK and Ireland next month to perform four shows including a show at KOKO in London on November 25th which is now sold out. Tour dates are as follows:
Olympia is an album of transformation; it presents a quantum evolution in the Toronto-based band’s sound, structure and style. Olympia is also the first confessional record for the principal songwriter/vocalist, Katie Stelmanis, whose heartfelt lyrics touch on a range of sentiments that stem from a relationship ending, a relationship beginning, and friends' struggles with addiction and motivation.
Written and recorded in collaboration with members of Austra's touring band, the album takes influences from musical sources including South American wind ensembles, eastern folk music, 80s industrial and Chicago house. Olympia remains a pop record of deep layers and subtle gesture; one that requires patience to absorb the nuance to be found within its layers.
Austra is Katie Stelmanis, Maya Postepski and Dorian Thornton, and they will be joined on this tour by Ryan Wosniak.
We are extremely happy to introduce you to The Bohicas!
The Bohicas are Domino’s latest signing, but more accurately they're four young men from Essex and the east London borderlands making ambitious and arresting rock 'n' roll. They also have a serious stage presence and are destined to be heralded as a great live act.
Back in September they flew to Ibiza to support Franz Ferdinand on stage at Ibiza Rocks. Whilst there they shot their first video, which features two tracks, XXX and Swarm. The video script was written by lead singer Dominic McGuinness and his brother and is intended as a short filmic introduction to the band's world, rather than as a straight music video. So without further ado:
The Bohicas are on a UK tour during November, with a show at London’s Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on 21st November as part of the NME Radar Tour.

This Saturday November 9th I will be opening for RM Hubbert at The Vortex in Dalston, London. It's at 11 Gillett Square N16 8AZ.
I will be on stage at 8.30pm
Despite the venue's famous jazz credentials, and the fact that the last 5 gigs I have done have been round the corner at a place called 'Servant Jazz Quarters', the music I will be playing isn't very jazzy. I doubt RM Hubbert's will be either.
Here is a link to a new Soundcloud page which has some of my solo music on it and a recent mix I made:
Anna Calvi’s ‘Suddenly’, the intense, dramatic opener from her acclaimed second album,One Breath, will be released as a single on 23rd December 2013. The track will be available on 7” (RUG560) and as a digital bundle (RUG560D) b/w a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Fire’ Pre-order the 7”, HERE.
The stunning accompanying video was directed by long-term creative collaborator, Emma Nathan, who said the following:
‘I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with Anna visually throughout both of her albums and through this a visual language has developed that accompanies her musical aesthetic. The song connected with me in a filmic way, it spoke of black and white, late 40's, classic, emotional, Billy Wilder and Douglas Sirk. These were the images I got when listening to ‘Suddenly’, those of deeply withheld emotion and extreme release.’
A more personal record than its Mercury and Brit-nominated predecessor, One Breath retains the fiery elements of her debut but is more instinctive and urgent, revealing a wider spectrum of textures and emotion. The album is available now on CD (WIGCD284), LP (WIGLP284), digitally (WIG284D) and special edition heavyweight gatefold LP (WIGLP284X). Order the album through Dom Mart HERE or iTunes HERE.

Fans eager to purchase Cupid Deluxe can do so one week early on November 12th exclusively on iTunes worldwide (from THIS LINK), and on November 18th via all traditional music retailers worldwide. The album is available to pre-order now on CD & 2xLP via Domino Mart, HERE.
Cupid Deluxe, featuring guest appearances by David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Samantha Urbani (Friends), Clams Casino, Despot, Adam Bainbridge (Kindness), Skepta and many more, is the follow up to Hynes’ debut as Blood Orange, 2011’s Coastal Grooves. Since that album’s release, Hynes has written and produced music for the likes of Solange, Sky Ferreira, MKS, and more. Cupid Deluxe shows a more expansive aural palate than its predecessor while retaining the pop sensibilities that Hynes has showcased since his days in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion. Simply put, Cupid Deluxe perfectly highlights why Hynes has become one of the most exhilarating and prolific voices creating music right now.

In 1982 Brian Eno made his celebrated remark about the legacy of the Velvet Underground - that they had inspired everyone who had bought their records to form a band. For my generation, the one that grew up on and grew up with guitars in the second half of the1980s, it felt as if the Velvet Underground were our contemporaries.
When VU appeared in 1985 it was the first new Velvet Underground music to have been heard since Live 1969 over a decade earlier. Within a year Polydor had also released Another VU and the band were the subject of an hour long South Bank Show, one that included those precious few seconds of the band rehearsing in The Factory in their Exploding Plastic Inevitable pomp.
The Velvet Underground was a name that was inescapable during early adolescence. It could be decoded on the back sleeve of Hunky Dory and if you managed to thread the names together, the song writing credits listed for Sister Ray on Still. In 1983 Victor Bockris and Gerard Malanga had published their Velvets biography Uptight, but before the arrival of VU it was easier to stand in a bookshop and flick through its monochrome photographs of the band than it was to hear their music, especially the four original studio albums which were often only available as expensive imports. There were other releases available. The truly committed fan could hear fifth generation recordings of the unreleased Cycle Annie and Loop on the Etc and And So On bootlegs, whereas the merely curious had to settle for the cheaply pressed Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground Featuring Nico compilation with its Pop Art-on-a-budget sleeve.
Once VU precipitated a renewed interest in the band the Velvet Underground became newly relevant, to the point of becoming a generational obsession. The band held an aura that was inviolable; they were not so much an influence as an article of faith. A cursory listen to any record made by a guitar band on an independent label in the last thirty years demonstrates how much their presence is felt across the history of contemporary music.
Lou Reed famously said he wrote songs ‘so people wouldn’t be alone’. Listening through to his records it became clear that he understood people with a tenderness that was at odds with the persona he often set against the media. These people include the cross dressers of the Factory, the woman who had her children taken away in Berlin, Stephanie and Caroline, Waltzing Matilda and everyone who takes part in The Halloween Parade. They are strong characters living difficult lives and many of them have problems. Reed understood them well enough not to pass judgement and by introducing them into our lives we certainly felt less alone. Most listeners would hope Reed’s empathy touched the lives of those who inhabit his songs as well.
As well as being capable of a deep compassion for those inhabiting the margins of society Reed, perhaps more than anyone, understood that at its best rock and roll contains an undeniable spiritual truth.
Some people’s lives - often the best people’s lives, certainly the most interesting people’s lives - really are saved by rock and roll. Ask anyone who has made it his or her business to be in a band how it feels to be able to sing the fourth line from Sweet Jane:
"Me I’m in a rock and roll band".
Whatever the reply there will almost certainly be a smile on their face.
The original Live 1969 version of Sweet Jane contains six words that are missing from the Loaded version:
"Thinking ways to get back home"
For reasons I don’t quite understand this lyric seems to have an emotional cadence that even in a canon as poignant as the one Lou Reed has bequeathed feels overwhelming.
If your life has been saved by rock and roll, then thinking about ways to get back home is something you’re just going to have to get used to.
"Anyone who's ever had a dream Anyone who's ever played a part Anyone who's going to live lonely Anyone who's ever stood apart"
And then at the end of the Live 1969 version of Sweet Jane you can hear Lou Reed’s voice speaking softly as he says:
