Wild Beasts | 08/04/14

Image: WB ASBT

A Simple Beautiful Truth will be released as the next single from Wild Beasts on 19th May 2014. This is the second single from their fourth album, Present Tense, which entered the UK album charts at 10 and is already seen as one of the best albums of the year so far (Gigwise, NME, MOJO).

The accompanying video was filmed by Klaus Thymann. The band had the following to say about it: 'We were inspired enough by the absurdist approach taken by Talking Heads to don electric suits and dance in the ether on the top of a Beacons mountain. We wanted to capture the weightlessness of a song like A Simple Beautiful Truth, to attempt something so ridiculous as to be sublime. The experience was strangely liberating and we asked ourselves why we hadn't done this before.'

Wild Beasts have just completed a UK tour in support of Present Tense, which culminated in a sold out, unforgettable show at London’s Brixton Academy, the band’s biggest London headline show to date. The band are currently on tour in Europe and will return to the UK to perform at The Great Escape, End Of The Road (as the Sunday night headline act) and Bestival, with further dates to be announced. Full live dates are below.

Alongside its breathtaking leap in production (Wild Beasts worked in close collaboration with co-producers Lexxx and Brian Eno protégé Leo Abrahams), Present Tense finds the band at the peak of their considerable songwriting powers – each one of the album’s eleven tracks illuminating the precious, tender, sad and funny moments of modern life in their trademark plain-spoken poetics. The album is available to buy now from Dom Mart and iTunes.

Image: We Are Floating

Archie Bronson Outfit reveal a new track, We Are Floating, through Domino on Monday May 19th 2014.

Arp Cleveland of the Archie Bronson Outfit, said of the track:

We Are Floating is about flux, transition, motion, potions, disappearing notions, moving, grooving, hovering, bothering; being dazed but giving praise.”

It is taken from their forthcoming album, Wild Crush, which is released on the same day.

The single will be accompanied by a video directed by Adam Mallett.

Commenting on the video, Adam Mallett said:

Phantoms in the night move between horizon lines in a psychedelic world of transmogrification and candy coloured beauty. Your brain window opens up to a land where trees are ears, forks are fingers, and your heart is overwhelmed by a greater love. Welcome to your new home.”

Wild Crush, recorded in their home-town of Bath, is Archie Bronson Outfit’s fourth album, and their first since Coconut in 2010. It is released on standard LP (WIGLP333)/ limited edition purple coloured vinyl (WIGLP333X), CD (WIGCD333) and digitally (WIG333D). Also, for the audiophiles, the album was mastered at half speed for maximum aural pleasure, the first Domino album to use this process.

You can pre-order Wild Crush via Dom Mart HERE or iTunes HERE.

The bold, flirtatious artwork for both the single and album was designed by renowned illustrator Stevie Gee –

Alexis Taylor | 02/04/14

Image: Alexis taylor announcement

We are pleased to announce the release of Alexis Taylor’s second solo album and first for Domino, Await Barbarians, on 9th June 2014.

Possessing the same immediacy as his music with Hot Chip and the adventurousness of his work with About Group, there is a special intimacy to the lyrics of Alexis Taylor’s Await Barbarians, a simplicity and candour in his expression of emotion, though the moments of honesty are matched with a sense of humour, playfulness and fun.

Playing and recording all the instruments himself apart from strings, Taylor also presents a more reflective side of his writing and singing, which comes into focus in a more confident and defined manner than before. With its brushed cymbal-led quiet and solitude, and its startlingly direct recording approach, the album recalls in places the work of such English luminaries as Mark Hollis and Robert Wyatt. Recalling such recordings is one thing, but the record doesn't sound especially like those. Await Barbarians' soundworld is entirely Taylor's own - at times claustrophobic, synth-led and dry, and at others spacious, warm and homely, it always places Taylor's unique and recognizable vocals up front in the mix, rarely adorned by audible effects.

Await Barbarians is a record whose warm tones draw you in, whose sequencing asks of the listener an uninterrupted session of close listening, and whose sound world reminds us of the pleasures of all that is quiet in music. It is rich in deep insight and profound feeling, a truly significant album by one of the country’s most continually arresting musicians.

Watch a video for the album track ‘Elvis Has Left The Building

Await Barbarians will be available on CD (WIGCD334), standard LP (WIGLP334) and Digital (WIG334D). White Lung | 27/03/14

Image: Deep Fantasy

Resilient and hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit, White Lung are set to release their third album Deep Fantasy via Domino on June 16th/17th. The band is every bit as confrontational as before, but they’ve managed to open their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face.  In a very good way.

After a year plus of near constant touring behind Sorry — which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview —White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William.  Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It’s The Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one.  William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With the Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Royal Trux | 25/03/14

Image: Royal Trux Radio

Do you remember the summer of 1998; the traffic jams and morning radio?

How fantastic is it to be able to reach back and take those memories whole?

It was a brave old world back in the year 2000; on the Domino side of the street (we called it “the fast lane” — what did we know?), the production team of Adam and Eve deliriously blended the guilty pleasures of late 90s smooth r ’n’ b (as epitomized by the group Class Houses, featuring Reeta Young) with the pushy funk of Royal Trux. Featuring, ladies and gentlemen, Jennifer Herrema and Neil Hagerty, etc.

An album and an EP removed from the synapse-splitting Accelerator, “The Radio Video EP” knocked our vision of Royal Trux out of focus in five quick tracks, while simultaneously morphing into a new incarnation that we might finally hope to understand in some future days (2014? Nahhh...). Dance-poppin’ Trux! But a close listen to “The Radio Video EP” will find you following a trail backwards though Royal Trux history, walking along the blared lines and stinky beats of the “Mercury” b/w “Shockwave Rider” single and the “Spike Cyclone” double 7" (both now collected on, Singles, Live, Unreleased), as well as Veterans of Disorder’s “Sickazz Dog,” for pure drooling nonsense — all abstract momentos of rude and shocking compulsions built upon hard rock and roll.

Of course, this new EP wasn’t a catch-all release revisiting former poses —no, never! In keeping with Royal Trux tradition, “The Radio Video EP” was a new and hitherto untouched quantity — this time, well-machined, club-ready psych-pop, presented for the pleasure of all the people of Earth, with no discriminations.

Just months away from their sudden flameout, Royal Trux were still flying high, enjoying their little plot next to the mainstream and the bridge tolls that it provided To this end, “The Inside Game” was licensed to the major motion picture High Fidelity, for two young skateboarder types to mime at in punkish, sub-Beasties style. Elsewhere, the jam and-recitation “Victory Chimp, Episode 3” (much more of which was to come a decade down the line) was recorded at an unplugged session in a downtown Chicago Borders Books & Music one autumn afternoon in 1999. The Royal Trux release of summer 2000 promised even more renegade MOR rock and roll pleasures — but time wasn’t on their side for the next round.

Today, Neil and Jennifer are back in the face again, with a steady series of releases from The Howling Hex and Black Bananas strafing society from opposite sides of the divide. And from above and beyond, the next-to-last Royal Trux release (until the tales-from-the-crypt Hand of Glory dropped in ’02 — coming back soon!) is here and queer: “The Radio Video EP.

Mouse On Mars | 24/03/14

Image: Mouse on Mars

It's time for a mouse on mars movie:

Longstanding German duo Mouse on Mars are celebrating their 21st year confusing listeners worldwide, and have some big plans for the celebration.

Along with Indiegogo and German filmmakers Kaliber16, the two surrealists have put together a campaign to rustle together funds for a documentary – entitled 21 Again – that will span Mouse on Mars’ long history, and we’re all for it.

From their comedic Vulvaland back in 1994 to their more recent flirtations with footwork and dubstep on Spezmodia, Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner’s peculiar experimentations with electronic music have dragged them through genres, trends and decades kicking and screaming. A career-spanning documentary feels like it could shine a welcome spotlight on one of the genre’s most unpredictable acts, and the filmmakers plan to splice together an enticing selection of rare footage and full interviews with Matthew Herbert, Tyondai Braxton, Mark E. Smith, Tortoise, Stereolab, Markus Popp and plenty more.

As expected, those who donate money to the campaign can expect a selection of goodies, from postcards, downloads and DVDs all the way to an actual producer’s credit on the film.

You can check out the campaign here, and don’t forget take a look at Mouse on Mars’ recent (brilliant) encounter with FACT TV.

Fránçois & the Atlas Mountains | 21/03/14

Image: newsletter FR fatam

This week, Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains release their new album Piano Ombre. Rather than just release the album through the traditional avenues, the band are releasing an innovative album app through iTunes to give fans a new way to experience the band’s music.

In addition to listening to the album, the album-app gives users a wealth of exclusive extras including access to additional tracks using the unique ‘Sun Tracker’ function, lyrics and song descriptions and updates from Frànçois via his handwritten tour journal.

Highly interactive and elegantly produced, it mirrors Frànçois Marry’s creativity towards his music perfectly. Heavily involved in the making of the app, Frànçois introduces the app below and offers a demonstration HERE.

“I am very excited to present Piano Ombre in the form of an application. Not only does it include a super version of the album, but it also includes an opportunity to dig further into the story behind each song, to follow the band on tour, and to have an insight of the band's creative environment.

When the label proposed me to take part in the creation of a Piano Ombre app, I was cautious of not creating just content that the user could collect and store (and forget about...) in their device. I wanted Piano Ombre to make the user look beyond their iPhone or iPad. I wanted an application that would make the user aware of where they are in space and in time.

That's why in order to unlock some exclusive Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains music, the Piano Ombre app invites you to track the position of the sun according to the time of the day or night you're in.

I hope you will enjoy the experience.

The ‘Sun Tracker’ function is at the app’s core and a concept created by Frànçois. With 24 songs exclusive to the app available to unlock, users can take photographs of the Sun, add filters to emulate Piano Ombre’s artwork and share. As the Sun moves each hour, a different track will be made available.

Two versions of the app will be available through iTunes. The lite version will offer 90 second samples and an option to buy Piano Ombre. Lyrics, guitar chords, handwritten explanations of each song by Francois will also be available upon purchase. Purchase the lite version HERE.

The premium version will automatically allow users to listen to the album at any time and come complete with lyrics, chords and explanations. A digital download of the album will also be sent to their email address. The premium version will be available to purchase HERE from Monday 24th March.

As well as via the app, Piano Ombre is now available on CD (WIGCD321), LP (WIGLP321), Digital (WIG321D) and limited edition vinyl with a bonus 7” featuring two exclusive tracks, Sleepwalkers Town and Bus Rouge (WIGLP321X). The iTunes edition (WIG321D1) will feature the two bonus tracks as well as an instant grat of La Vérité. Order the album through Dom Mart, HERE and through iTunes, HERE.

Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains will be bringing their fantastic live show to the UK and Europe this Spring playing a sold out London headlining show at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on the 26th of March.  We are very excited to announce that they will also be headlining The Scala on November 11th, as part of the prestigious Festival Les InRocKs Philips, the first time that Les Inrocks has brought their world renowned festival to the UK. Domino is happy to once again be involved with Record Store Day which will take place on April 19th 2014. A range of special edition releases listed below will be sold exclusively through independent outlets around the country and you can read more about each release further down the page.

Domino will be releasing the following:

Julia Holter – ‘Don't Make Me Over’ /‘Hello Stranger’ AA-side 7”

Hamilton Leithauser – ‘Alexandra’ and ‘In The Shallows’ B-side 7”

Steve Mason – Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time Greg Wilson mixes 12”

Villagers – ‘Occupy Your Mind’ 7”

Julia Holter – ‘Don't Make Me Over’ by Dionne Warwick and ‘Hello Stranger’ 7”

Julia Holter's 7" single features a brand new, full band studio recording of her version of ‘Don't Make Me Over’, a song originally performed by Dionne Warwick and written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The AA-side is ‘Hello Stranger’, another cover (this time of Barbara Lewis) and one of the highlights of last year's much-lauded Loud City Song album. The single's beautiful artwork was designed by long-time Holter collaborator Rick Bahto.

Hamilton Leithauser – ‘Alexandra’ and ‘In The Shallows’ B-side 7”

Having announced his debut solo album Black Hours via Ribbon Music on May 5th, Hamilton Leithauser is marking a new chapter in his career, beginning by releasing a special double-sided 7” for Record Store Day.

‘Alexandra’’, the first track to be taken from Black Hours , will be available on 7” vinyl. The B-side will be ‘In The Shallows’, a brand new track recorded during Hamilton’s album sessions. Guests across the two tracks include Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes), Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), Richard Swift (The Shins/solo) and Hugh McIntosh from Leithauser’s first band, The Recoys.

Watch the video for ‘Alexandra’ HERE

Steve Mason – The Greg Wilson & Derek Kaye Remixes 12”

Monkey Minds In the Devil’s Time is an album that has been shaped by the current global political climate and the lack of dissenting voices in music and popular culture in general.  The righteous, undaunted anger at the heart of the album has helped to create Mason’s best record to date.

Now Steve Mason is releasing a special two-track 12” featuring remixes of ‘Seen It All Before’ and ‘Come to Me’ which both feature on last year’s Monkey Minds In the Devil’s Time. Remixes are courtesy of Greg Wilson and Derek Kaye.

Villagers – Occupy Your Mind 7”

Having won Ireland’s prestigious Meteor Choice Music Prize for their album {Awayland} last month, Villagers are set to release their new; James-Ford produced single ‘Occupy Your Mind’ on limited edition clear vinyl on Record Store Day. The 7” release will be backed by new track ‘Beatitudes’ exclusively for the occasion.
