WHITE LUNG SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR IN YOUR HOME

White Lung | 08/07/14

Image: White Lung In Your Home video still

Fresh from touring Australia and New Zealand, White Lung are poised to release new single ‘In Your Home’ on August 25th before tearing up North America with a string of live dates once again. Mish Way explains the video:

“This video was created by Justin Gradin and Ben Jacques. Justin has done all our album art since our first LP so ‘In Your Home’ is funny, demented and uncomfortable, it's perfect. The star of the video is my dear friend Christina Kenton who pushes the baby cart and smiles at the end. She's an incredible artist herself. This video is filled with people way more talented than the four of us.”

Watch the new video for ‘In Your Home’ below.

Deep Fantasy is their third full length and proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears that Vancouver’s hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in:

“I wanted it to sound more like a rock record than a punk record. I didn't want to lose any of the speed and aggression that we have, but I wanted more melodies,” says Way, “But it's still a really hard record.”

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With the Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  Guitarist Kenneth William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Anne-Marie Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Mish compiled a playlist: ‘Songs That Inspired Deep Fantasy’, listen  HERE

Deep Fantasy is available to buy now from Dom Mart HERE and through iTunes HERE

AUSTRA SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR HULLUU

Austra | 03/07/14

Image: Austra Hul

Toronto-based Austra have shared a video for Hulluu, directed by Zeesy Powers and featuring choreography and dancing from Emily Law

Hulluu is the last track on Habitat, a brand-new four-track EP which is out now. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12" here from Austra or download from iTunes

Katie Stelmanis from Austra said the following about the video:

I knew that I wanted the video for Hulluu to focus on movement. I've known Emily since I was 12 and she is the best dancer/waacker in Toronto so I definitely wanted her to be a part of it. Zeesy is a super-talented artist who I used to live with and collaborate with all the time making soundtracks for her performance art pieces (and who was actually the one to encourage me to start performing my own music in the first place). I thought it would be cool to work together again. We used a green screen and filmed Emily dancing to the track for about 4 hours.

In director Powers' words: "The spirit self is unleashed in the nightclub in your mind. The beat hits and time stops, speeds up, slows down. On the dance floor do you compete with others or only yourself? True freedom fills the body with what we have been, are, and could be. Shedding psychic bodies reveals the person always there. Move."

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella and Sasquatch and have upcoming festivals in Canada and Europe including a show at Oval Space in London on 10th July. The band has also announced North American dates supporting Broken Bells. Full dates are below.

“'Habitat' is an old song that we've waited almost three years to release," says the band's Katie Stelmanis. "It didn't seem to fit with the sounds of Feel it Break or Olympia, so we decided to finally put it out as a single along with 3 new instrumental tracks. There's a lot of live versions of the song online but people have always pressed us to make a proper recording, so we are especially excited to announce these limited-edition physical copies of the EP. It’s a euro-style computer music experiment produced with love from me, Maya, and Dorian."

Composed of eleven stunning and emotive tracks, From Scotland With Love was written by King Creosote and produced by music supervisor and guitarist David McAulay, with additional production by Paul Savage, in Chem19 Studios in Glasgow. The record features King Creosote accompanied by his band – Derek O’Neill (keyboards), Andy Robinson (drums), Pete Mcleod (bass), and Kevin Brolly (clarinet) – as well as an additional string section (arranged by cellist Pete Harvey), and a choir of backing vocalists. For One Night Only (RUG608D) will be released as the first single from the album, and both single and album will be available on 21st July 2014. Watch the accompanying video, extracted from the film, From Scotland With Love.

From Scotland With Love was created in collaboration with director Virginia Heath and Producer Grant Keir as an audio-accompaniment to a poetic documentary film of the same name, to be released for the Commonwealth Games this summer. Featuring archive footage but no narration or interview, the film works around themes of love and loss, war, resistance, emigration, work and play, and is driven as much by the music as it is the images. For the first time King Creosote found himself being able to write from other people’s perspectives, such as the female characters found in the archive (the ‘fisher lassies’ inspired the moving track Cargill, for example). The result is From Scotland With Love, one of King Creosote’s most widescreen cinematic and finest pieces of work to date.

From Scotland With Love will be released on CD (WIGCD338), heavyweight vinyl LP with download codes (WIGLP338) and Digital (WIG338D). An extended version of the album encompassing all the music from the film will be available on heavyweight double gatefold vinyl LP (WIGLP338X) with 8 bonus tracks, Favourite Girl, Melt, Marie Celeste, Carry On Dancing, Hair of the Dawn, Return Ticket, 678, Bringing in the Bales. Pre-order the album through Dom Mart, HERE. The standard edition is available through iTunes, HERE and the Extended Edition, HERE.

BBC 2 Scotland will screen the film, From Scotland With Love, on the 22nd June at 10pm.

Image: Bob Moses Announcement

Having first formed in Brooklyn in 2012, Canadian production duo Bob Moses - comprised of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance - have recently signed to Domino and are releasing ‘First To Cry’ today.

The rising stars of the underground electronic world’s two-track 12” bundle, ‘I Ain’t Gonna Be The First To Cry’ and ‘Grace,’ is now available for digital purchase.

The band’s lead single, 'I Ain't Gonna Be The First To Cry,' premiered in late May and “is a dark and hazy eclectic mix of blues and electronic with heartfelt vocals” (Combo Rice) who’s “retained arrangement… seems to wring out the emotion of each note” (Clash Music). The track "has a soul of a blues song... with guitar work riding along with the pulse of the beat, the track builds with dark undertones and restraint toward an understated breaking point" (Pigeons & Planes).

For their AA-side track, ‘Grace,’ Bob Moses also released an audio-visual clip.

Currently, the duo is in the midst of a worldwide tour, having already made stops in Paris, Berlin, Ibiza, London, Istanbul and Moscow. They are headed west to North America next week, with a first stop at Brooklyn’s Output on June 20th, where they will debut brand new tracks. The band will then continue on to Miami, Philadelphia, Michigan, Chicago, Toronto and Atlanta.

JON HOPKINS SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR FORTHCOMING SINGLE, WE DISAPPEAR FEAT. LULU JAMES

Jon Hopkins | 16/06/14

Image: Jon Hopkins WeDis

Jon Hopkins has shared a new video for his forthcoming single, We Disappear feat. Lulu James, which was directed by Rob Chiu and stars Lulu James.

We Disappear feat. Lulu James - a collaborative reworking of the opening track from the Mercury-nominated, Immunity - will be available on 12” (RUG595T – pre-order HERE from Dom Mart) and Digital (RUG595D) from 30th June 2014, b/w a remix of Abandon Window by Moderat. You can purchase the one track digitally now through iTunes (RUG595D1).

A fan of Hopkins’ work, and known for her beautifully emotive, atmospheric vocals, it seemed right for rising star, Lulu James, to contribute vocals to We Disappear. The pair met when performing at Unknown Festival in Croatia, then soon after put down vocals at Hopkins' London studio. He then built a new version of the track around James' contributions, and the result is much sparser, and almost Lynchian - darkly atmospheric, pulsing and retaining the urgency of the original, but adding new depth with James' stunningly soulful vocal performance.

Following Jon Hopkins’ extraordinary live performances at The Great Escape, Field Day, Parklife and Sonar, he has just announced a one-off live audio-visual show at The Royal Festival Hall on Friday 19th September. Hopkins will perform new explorations of tracks from Immunity alongside music from his three film scores and other collaborations, and will be joined by long-term collaborator, guitarist and noise-maker Leo Abrahams and experimental string section Geese for a new show backed by visuals from Flat-e and Dan Tombs. Hopkins will also be performing at this year’s Glastonbury and Festival Number 6. Full live dates are as follows, with UK & Irish dates in bold:

The video was co-produced by Urban Outfitters as the 18th installment of their UO Music Video Series. Check out blog.urbanoutfitters.com/bloodorange for behind the scenes photos from the shoot, and watch “You’re Not Good Enough” now.

“I was very excited by the prospect of getting to do a music video for Dev. I'm obviously a huge fan of his, and we've been talking about trying to make a video together for a while now,” says director Gia Coppola. “Dev has great taste. I love discussing what interests us and bringing our ideas together. I've always been fascinated with choreography and live television, both of which felt perfect for ‘You're Not Good Enough.’”

The UO Music Video Series alumnus: Liars, Washed Out, Classixx, Charlie XCX, Autre Ne Veut, Tame Impala, How To Dress Well, Peaking Lights, Frankie Rose, The Walkmen, Nick Waterhouse, Cloud Nothings, Black Lips, Spank Rock, The War on Drugs, Beach Fossils, and Toro Y Moi.

King Creosote | 29/05/14

Image: King Creosote Announcement

For One Night Only (RUG608D) will be released as the first single from King Creosote’s forthcoming album, From Scotland With Love. Both single and album will be available on 21st July 2014.

Watch the accompanying video, extracted from the film, From Scotland With Love.

King Creosote will perform ‘From Scotland With Love’ live to a screening of Virginia Heath’s film at Glasgow Green, on the evening of July 31st, as part of the Festival Celebrations marking the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. A similar performance will take place at the Milton Court at The Barbican on 27th September 2014. Tickets for The Barbican are available HERE.

BBC 1 Scotland will screen the film, From Scotland With Love, on the 13th July at 6pm.

ANNA CALVI SHARES VIDEO FOR FORTHCOMING SINGLE, STRANGE WEATHER

Anna Calvi | 28/05/14

Image: Anna Calvi ep news photo

Anna Calvi has shared a video for ‘Strange Weather’, the lead single taken from her forthcoming EP of the same name, released on 14th July 2014. The accompanying video was filmed in New York by Alan Del Rio Ortiz.

‘Strange Weather’, a cover of the Keren Ann track, is a stunning collaboration between Anna Calvi and David Byrne, and will be released on 14th July 2014.

The 5 track covers EP was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York. It features covers of tracks by Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin and Keren Ann. The cover of Suicide’s Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify’, which is available to stream HERE.

Strange Weather will be available on 14th July on 12” (RUG600) and limited edition CD (RUG600CD). Click HERE to pre-order through Dom Mart and HERE through iTunes. The tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Papi Pacify (FKA twigs)
  2. I’m The Man, That Will Find You (Connan Mockasin) – featuring David Byrne
  3. Ghost Rider (Suicide)
  4. Strange Weather (Keren Ann) – Anna Calvi and David Byrne
  5. Lady Grinning Soul (David Bowie)

David Byrne said the following on working with Anna:

‘I’m a big fan of Anna's two records... and I caught her tour after her first record at Bowery Ballroom here in NY. ‘Epic’ I think is the word that is often used. So when Thomas Bartlett said he was going to be in the studio producing an EP of Anna doing covers I immediately agreed to join in. I was invited to suggest songs and I loved the last Keren Ann record and I thought Strange Weather had a haunting quality that might suit Anna.... so we did that, and Anna then suggested I join in on the Connan Mockasin track she'd done too.’

Anna Calvi will be playing live over the next few months in support of Strange Weather as well as her critically acclaimed sophomore album One Breath, with UK shows at Isle of Wight, Latitude and Green Man Festivals, with more festival dates to be announced soon.
